PLANNING YOUR MOVE

IF YOU RENT YOUR PRESENT HOME

If you are currently renting your home, it is important to provide the necessary notice to your tenants or landlord before moving. You should also make arrangements for the return of any deposit money you may have. In addition, if you have telephone or cable TV services, remember to disconnect them before leaving.

AT YOUR “NEW” HOME

When you move to your new home, make sure to arrange for the gas and electric utilities, telephone, and cable TV to be connected on the day the sale closes.

GENERAL

To ensure your mail is forwarded to your new address, visit your local post office or change your address online via the Post Office website.

Cancel any contracted services and inform any home services you use, such as gardening, dry cleaning, garbage pick-up, newspaper delivery, or diaper services, of your move. You’ll need to arrange for these services at your new address. It’s also important to update your address on your bank accounts and any credit cards.

Remember to cancel or transfer any personal or business affiliations and memberships, and arrange for the transfer of any medical, dental, prescription records. Don’t forget to change the address on your driver’s license effective the day of the move.

Before the moving day, collect all items that need cleaning, repair or storage, such as dry cleaning. Make special arrangements for the moving of perishables, such as plants and arrange transportation or care for your pets. Lastly, dispose of all flammable liquids in a safe manner as movers are not permitted to carry them.
